Best glide speed when soaring

Hi I operate a Pipstrell Virus (41 wingspan) out of Placerville, CA and Canby Oregon. Great motorglider plenty fast 120 kts. Question, when thermaling, the manul suggest 49 kts and one notch of flaps. My understanding is that may reduce the glide ratio but may improve the minimum sink rate, has anyone used flaps when thermaling, and what was the performance?

Roger - sorry for the late response - hard to measure best glide and min sink, but I think the rationale for flaps in thermal is to reduce stall speed enabling tighter turns in the narrow column thermals. rand
